Jason Castro: Fact or Myth

Oh my mention the name Jason Castro and you will get some interesting responses, “Bum” “Not worth it” “Bench him” “He has become Chris Carter” “His momma is fat” ok the last few were made up, but you get the point. People just do not dig the Astros lone All Star representative last year any more…. Why? Well people are just plain crazy….

Jason Castro is of course not the player “offensively” that he was last season. Last season Castro went “HULK” mode and this season Castro is back to being David Banner.

Castro is on pace to have 14 home runs and 64 RBI’s, last season Castro ended with 18 home runs and 56 RBI’s. Castro is also on pace to strikeout 158 times compared to 130 this past season.

So your telling me the guy fans complain about and say is having a down year is going to have 4 less home runs and finish with more RBI’s, not so bad in my opinion.

Yes his average is down and his doubles are down but he is nearly the same in every other way. The problem is fans have tricked themselves in to thinking Jason Castro of last year was just the tip of the iceberg, when in fact last year was just a career year, every player has them.

Fans tricked themselves in to thinking Castro was going to be the cleanup hitter for the next five years. Fans tricked themselves in to thinking Castro was going to hit 20 to 25 home runs and 70 to 90 RBI’s every year. I can’t blame you I was tricked to, but I understand now what Jason Castro is.

Jason Castro is a good and solid bottom of the order bat. The problem is on the Astros he was and is STILL asked to be the main guy, he was asked to be that guy we tricked ourselves in to thinking he could be, he just isn’t.

But why did his drop off in production register SO much more then it should have.

A. The Astros used him in the meat of the lineup, he can’t drive in guys who aren’t on base
B. His strikeout rate became really outrageous, though it’s tough to get good pitches when pitchers don’t care about the guys behind you
C. The Astros early in the season were an awful team, so blame the all star…

If the Astros were .500 team and Castro was batting 7th or 8th, people would be VERY happy with 14 home runs and 64 RBI’s. The problem is the Astros aren’t a .500 team and the team can’t afford to bat him that far down in the lineup because on this current Astros team, his power is needed.

Castro in FACT is not myth on a different team Castro would be a hell of a player, he stands out cause the Astros are, well…. The Astros.
