Will Chope day of his fight was released by the UFC after a bleacher report story came out about Chope being discharged from the Air Force for abusing his now ex wife. While yes domestic abuse is not to be tolerated, could the UFC have released Chope a little to hastily?
One day after the bleacher report broke, the fight was canceled and it was learned that Chope was indeed cut. Is less then 24 hours enough to do a compete investigation? The speediness of the release makes me feel like UFC president Dana White read the bleacher report story and was enraged and canceled his contract.
Chope spoke with MMA Fighting and shared his side of the story
In the video you hear Chope say he was young, he never lied to the UFC, and the statements that were taking might not have been completely accurate, so what he was released for might not have been 100 percent true. Yes Chope did go to jail so there was guilt but the extent of the guilt only Chope and his ex wife know.
Per Will Chope he will speak with UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby after the event tonight to explain everything and hopefully something will be worked out and Chope will be allowed to stay with the organization. The UFC has suspended fighters for putting the organization in a bad light “100 percent I would (accept a suspension)” Chope said.
While it’s easy to cut a fighter 0-1 in the UFC, 6’4 lightweights don’t grow on trees and the UFC should dig a little deeper in to the Chope situation before making a “final decision”.
Do we remember when a story came out about Jeremy Stephens getting arrested for nearly beating a man to death? He is still employed and so are countless of other fighters who have damaged the UFC’s shield.
